Blog Entry 4 : Reflection

Before the beginning of this semester, I was very worry about this ENG 102 class. The reason for me to worry is because English is not my native language. I feel not confident and comfortable when I write English essay or read English poem. Besides, I had some bad experience when I took ENG 101 last spring. During the first day of this class, I can really feel the stress of writing essays come back to me again. Nevertheless, the use of blogger to teach in class make me feel more comfortable. Even thought the first day I was very confuse about what to do with the blog, now I start to be more get used of it. I like posting my essay on my blog. This is because I can let more people to read and giving me feedback. I have other blog which is in Chinese language and I like to see my friends leave a comments to me so that I can improve my writing skills as well. Besides, I can also read other people's blogs and leave a comment to them. By the way, I think this not only can improve our reading and writing, but can also enhance the interaction between classmates who not really have chance to talk in class. The other thing that I like about this class is we don't have to buy an expensive textbook. The only thing to buy is just the small book. We can save a lot from that.

Through this "Supernatural" class, I think that this class will not be bored like usual English class. This is because the theme of the class is so attractive for most of us to feel free to search about some mysterious things such as vampire, mythology, folklore, ghost, fairies etc. Usually this kind of topic will not be taught in class. We can relate this class to some TV show or novel that we like a lot. The use of access of internet in computer lab also made the works easier for me to do research. Usually I will use Yahoo, Wikipedia and Google to do my research. Until recently, my cousin told me to use Mamma.com and Yahoo Answer to do my research as well. I found those websites are really useful for me.

Blog 3: Essay 2: Tone and symbolism

To make a vivid and interesting poem, a poet must have certain ingredients that are very important in all poems. These things are theme, motif, tone, symbolism, rhythm etc. I choose the poem “In His Arm” because I like the story “Vampire Diaries” very much. The storyline is very hot and interesting for many teenagers. This poem is talking about the heroine, Elena found that his boyfriend, Stefan is acting weird and mysterious. She is very curious about his boyfriend. As a result, she secretly follows him. When she follows him to his house, she got very shocked when she saw he is sucking the blood of doves. She realizes that he is a Vampire. He is feeding animal blood. Stefan realizes that she knew everything and he wants to explain to her about what he just did. She is extremely shocked. The hidden meaning in this poem is also easy for me to understand. I can imagine those images in my mind when I look at the poem. This is one of the reasons why I chose this poem to post on my blog. After I post it in the blog, I hope that more people in my class will consider watching this show or reading the whole series of “Vampire Diaries”. I also hope that people who watch this show or read the novel can share their opinions with me.

Every poem will have at least one tone in it. Tone in a poem is the author’s attitude towards the poem. The reason a poem must have a tone is because it is a way that poet expresses his feeling, mood, and emotion toward the story of the poem. This will create an atmosphere related to the story and make the poem be more interesting. This can also make readers have more images about the poem when they read it. Some of the examples of tones in poems are humorous, romantic, fear, cynical, and upbeat. In the poem “In his arm”, the tones that the author try to maintain are dread and fear. What you think or feel after reading the poem is the tone of the poem. In the entire poem, the poet creates a very scary atmosphere when the heroine finds out that her boyfriend is a vampire and when he describes the whole process of the vampire feeding on the animal’s blood. "A heavenly face masked by blood" in this poem describes the vampire's face is full with blood. The author also uses some words such as thunder, blood, scream, darkness and others to create a scary atmosphere.

In this poem, I also found some symbolism the author uses to represent something using words. Symbolism is a word that an author may use in his poem to represent some meanings other than the original meaning of the word. As a result, every poem will have many hidden meaning based on the use of symbolism. For example, the word “death” means the end of life. Yet the author uses this word in the poem to represent vampire, which scare people a lot. Besides, the use of word “thunder” in the poem is not really means the loud noise produced during a storm. The real hidden meaning is to represent the heroine’s inner feeling which is extreme terror and does not know what to do. Another example is the word “tissues.” It does not actually mean the real tissue that we use. It is used to describe the dead body of doves.

This poem makes me feel very curious about vampires. Even though I do not hope to see one, I really like to know more about them. Can vampire be in love with human? Can they restrain their thirst without drinking human’s blood? I hope this poem can elicit more readers about vampire’s lives.

Blog 2: In his arms

In His Arms

I see Death.

Once again I follow him
The man I love
The man I don’t know
His empty room lies in ruin
I follow up the stairs
Onto the dark balcony
A figure huddled on the edge
Lighting Flashes

I see Death.

Discarded doves surround the figure
Their white bodies resembling used tissues
The figure turns
Lighting flashes again
A heavenly face masked by blood
I hear a scream
Now pressed against the rusted railing
The figure approaches me

I see Death.

Words of comfort spill from blood stained lips
Thunder cracks
Everything I felt disappears
I fall into darkness
I hear a scream, like the ones before
They are mine
I realize I’m falling
I wait for the end

I see Death.

The figures cold arms wrap around me
My freefall ends
I am on the ground, unharmed
I cant scream
I cant react
I might as well be dead
The figure carries me inside
Whispering promises of explanations.

I see Stefan.

I like vampire stories very much. The reason for me to change my poem is because recently I like Vampire Diaries very much. This drama and novel are very hot among teenagers. This drama is airing in CW 11. I felt that this drama is very exciting and mysterious. It is really hot.

This poem is talking about when the heroine, Elena found that his boyfriend, Stefan is acting weird and mysterious. He also have a lot of secret with him. She is very curious about his boyfriend. As a result, she secretly follow him. When she follows him to his house, She got very scared when she saw he is sucking the blood of doves. He is a Vampire. He is feeding animal blood instead of human blood. Stefan realize that she knew everything and he wants to explain to her about that. She is extremely shocked.
